The Strangest Mooncake Flavours to Try in Singapore This Mid-Autumn Festival
One of our favourite things about this time of year is getting ready to see what popular mooncake stores and bakeries come up flavour-wise, just in time for the Mid Autumn Festival celebrations.
If you’ve already got your standard favourites but feel like being a bit adventurous this year, why not try one of these interesting mooncake flavours, plus some arrive in the most gorgeous gift box sets – they’re the perfect present!
FYI. For our non-mooncake eaters, snowskin mooncakes refer to cakes that are not baked (usually made from rice flour and wheat starch), while the traditional mooncakes are.
HAPPY Mid-Autumn Festival Singaporeans!
1. Nominee: Kyoho Grape & Ki No Bi Dry Gin Mooncake, Regent Hotel
Lift your spirits a little extra this year – pun intended – and add to the celebrations with one of the Regent’s specially curated, alcoholic-infused mooncakes.
Apart from the gin option, there’s another flavour crafted with Limoncello (and basil), as well as two non-alcoholic options, such as florally tea inspired mooncakes. They also arrive in leather-like travel cases, which can be reused after you’re done feasting!
Intoxication Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥
2. Nominee: Singapore Sling Snowy Mooncake, Pan Pacific Hotel
It makes sense to combine two of Singapore’s iconic celebrations…the Singapore Sling (cocktail) and Mid-Autumn Festival. However, this mooncake is completely alcohol free, and is in fact, a virgin Singapore-sling flavoured mooncake.
Apart from the famous cocktail, this year the hotel has decided to take a healthier route…Their mooncakes arrive with a choice of four flavours, with ten to choose from and five of the flavours are made using reduced sugar, like the White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts. The other five options are all snowskin mooncakes with flavours such as Mango Passionfruit or Matcha Black Sesame.
Taste Rating： ♥♥♥♥♥
3. Nominee: Limited Edition Ferris Wheel Mooncake Gift Box, Lady M
Alright, whilst the focus may not be on the actual flavours for this next nomination, it’s the ultra romantic limited edition gift box that sells it for us…Designed as a ferris wheel, you’ll find yourself exclaiming, “it’s too delicate!”, before you even get to the eating.
And get this, not just a carrier, the wheel is actually active, and can be turned on, lights included! It’s all about the whole experience, and if you have kids, they’ll love playing with the box afterwards too.
Dreaminess Rating： ♥♥♥♥♥
4. Nominee: Rose Flower Tea Truffle, InterContinental Hotel
Including floral-shaped mooncakes, it feels like you’re opening up a box to some sort of secret garden! And the flavours this year are just as soft and delicate sounding (and tasting) as the presentation of the floral-inspired cake.
Speaking of, there are four different flavours to choose from, each paying ode to numerous tea varieties…Enjoy flavours like Earl Grey Baileys Cream Truffle, Japanese Matcha Green Tea Paste & Osmanthus Truffle, Oolong Peach & Black Sesame Truffle, and Rose Flower Tea Truffle with Pistachio.
5. Nominee: Applewood Iberico Mooncakes, Bee Cheng Hiang
This is the ultimate combination of sweet and salty, thanks to the saltiness from the spanish meat they use, i.e. Applewood smoked Iberico, which they turn into bak kwa, and add a combination of nuts and sesame seeds.
If this sounds like your thing, treat yourself to one of their charcoal coloured mooncakes, but there are also other flavours to choose from. If you can’t imagine your mooncake without meat in it, try their signature Bakkwa Mooncake!
Sweet & Salty Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥
6. Nominee: Satay Dried Shrimp, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore
Celebrating local flavours, The Fullerton this year has decided to offer guests four flavours that use and showcase super traditional Nyonya ingredients. There are in fact 15 different mooncake options, but when ordering the The Clifford Pier Mooncake Tingkat, lookout for flavours that involve using spicy dried shrimp sambal, salted lotus paste, mango, pandan and chendol.
Some other unique mooncakes on offer this year take inspiration from the hotel restaurant’s famous desserts, like Rose Coconut, using inspo from their Rose Coconut Shaved Ice treat!
7. Nominee: Royal Milk Tea Paste with Gula Melaka Truffle, St. Regis Hotel
Pretty jewelry box or mooncake set? Slide out the draws and you’ll discover a set of four different flavoured mooncakes, or eight if ordering their Mini Snowskin Mooncakes – and we love that they offer both traditional/classic flavours, as well as those that are a bit more contemporary!
Speaking of, we all know how much milk tea is loved in this country, so the one that really caught our attention was this option, naturally. However this set also includes other deletacle flavours, such as Black & White Sesame Paste with Salted Peanut Truffle, and Yuzu Paste with Lemon Citrus. Our mouths are watering!
Fancy Shmancy Rating：♥♥♥♥♥
8. Nominee: Multi-coloured, rainbow mooncake: TWG TEA
Don’t be fooled, it’s not a musical box that you’ll collect, but it is in fact your mooncake gift set, yet the biggest, most playful surprise of them all is the actual mooncake itself!
Arriving in a set of four, the star of the show is the rainbow coloured mooncake, and it’s not just it’s looks that will blow your mind, but it’s a whole celebration of the senses. The flavour of this mooncake takes inspiration from TWG’s Moon Dance Tea, using citrus-y and sweet infused lime lotus pate, chocolate pearls, and a centre-filled cream.
9. Nominee: It’s a minion gift box (ideal for kids), Hong Kong Maxim
It’s everyone’s favourite minions…Dave and Stuart! The kids will have a blast receiving this gift box this Mid-Autumn Fest, and after unloading his head, you’ll find four mooncakes inside ( Purple Sweet Potato flavour). This has been cleverly done, if I might add, so that your little ones don’t experience a sugar rush!
The box is shaped exactly like a minion, the eyes even sway from side to side, AND light up! The young ones probably won’t even be too phased about the cakes if we’re dead honest!

10. Nominee: “Happy in Chess” Mooncake Gift Box, Mdm Ling Bakery
Did you know that during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the elder folk would often play chess and cheer whilst planting Chrysanthemums to admire the moon? This local bakery is inspired by board games this year and launched three mooncake gift boxes: Snake Chess, Chinese Chess and traditional Chess. The gift box comes with chess pieces and dice, which can be recycled, making it both environmentally-friendly and fun.
Mooncake flavour highlights include Nanyang Coffee Caramel, Hong Kong Salted Egg Custard, Belgian Chocolate, and Italian Chocolate Hazelnut – serving you both the traditional and creative.
P.s. We also highly recommend checking out their Signature Cookie-inspired Mooncake Series – especially if you’ve got a sweet tooth!
So many Mooncakes to try, so little time (just kidding, luckily in Singapore you can buy Mooncakes all year round, but it’s this time of year when the specialities come out!).
